Earth Day 2021

 Hey all.

Last year has shown us that people can be ugly, inside and out. There are prejudices, racism, broken, angry people, and a broken system that needs fixing. On top of that, an international pandemic swept the world, and it continues to rage on, despite people slowly but surely trying to move on to some kind of "normal". There were many times where last year left people feeling hopeless, helpless, and like things were never going to change for the better, but there are spots of hope to be found, even if you have to look for them.

There are the hard days, and it's hard living in the world that we are now, but we only have to look at the little things, and only then does their importance begin to stand out more than it did before.

But after the hard days, weeks, or year, sometimes we get a bit of good news, that makes things just a little more bright, when things seemed so dark and aimless before, and we start to see a chance of things getting better.

Being in a situation like quarantining because of a pandemic last year, we learned to see the simple things, like actually see them, and understand them for what they actually are: granules of beauty. For instance, on a daily walk, you notice all the life that continues despite the fact that humanity was on literal pause for one whole year. The way the wind bends the trees to its will, the sound of thunder, the pattering of rain against a hard surface. Maybe when you looked at the faces of your loved ones that you were quarantining with, you noticed that their eyes were more full of color than you had noticed before, or that their smile is the very brightest and most beautiful thing that you have ever seen. It's slowing down and looking at the little things, that really help to broaden our horizons that much more.

I will admit though, humanity has not extended the kindest of arms towards earth, and everything it has to offer us. It's honestly kind of sad just how many sci-fi movies exist where humanity has done so much damage to the earth that they end up leaving it. I hope in the future that this doesn't end up becoming an actual scenario. I am a bit of a history buff, and I think the only time that I've been more saddened about how destroyed a place can get was seeing what No Man's Land looked like during WWI.

I've seen enough wartime movies and read enough books in the same genre to understand that a war-torn place is never the place to be. I think the picture above can fit pretty easily into the term "hell on earth". Also just seeing what so much fighting can do to a place of nature is devastatingly heartbreaking to say the least. I think the most encouraging about this same place is what it looks like now.

Like all damaged places, healing takes a while, but it results in something better than it was before. I wonder if people take walks in this area, and think about what it used to look like; if they would imagine the sounds of gunfire, and explosions caused by shells and mortars. I wonder if people take living relatives who may have fought in WWI, so that they can see that time heals all wounds, even the most rough ones. In a way, things like this reflect humanity. We go through hard things, we fight, we get bruised, shattered, beaten down. But time heals all wounds, and the result is a stronger ecosystem than before, mentally, psychologically and emotionally.

Admittedly, it's hard to have hope for the world that I'm living in now. The crazy swirl of current events has me wondering if my future children will even have a way to feel safe in a place like this if things continue to get worse. There are victories that are won, especially the sentencing of the cop who murdered George Floyd a couple days ago, but that happened because people fought for their voices to be heard, they protested, they appealed to government officials, they did everything in their power to ensure that the life of one man got justice, and the beginning of closure. I know that fighting sometimes does end in victory, and other times it doesn't. But if the fight lasts long enough, we can start building towards the future and the system that will start to better things instead of ruin them.

I know that this is a fictional immortal superhero talking about mankind and how beautiful and ugly we can be at times, but she does make some good points, and although philosophically it doesn't go very deep, I still feel like there were some decent thoughts throughout. I'm not saying love is what unites us, because let me tell ya, 2020 did not convince me that love is what everyone is feeling right now. But if we fight for the same goals to get the outcome that everyone wants, that's unity at least. Then maybe we can start building towards the "loving each other" part eventually. Not saying that will happen anytime soon but I'm slightly optimistic.

Well, that's all from me, hope you guys are happy that I've been posting more. Hopefully I'll do cool things to talk about on this blog, so I hope to give you more stuff to read soon.

Happy earth day, everyone!
