Hey all, so I am finally going to tell you what kept me going during the period of finishing geometry. But a little background first. So I know a little about how extensive the Whoniverse can be. There's novels, audio dramas, comic books, a movie, an entire trove of missing episodes, a whole bunch of classic episodes starting from the First Doctor to the 7th, and so on. I happened to stumble upon some audio dramas while working on geometry one day. Apparently, because of how little TV action that Paul McGann (8) got after the movie that apparently flopped really hard (I have no idea why, I've never seen it so don't ask me), someone decided to be really, really nice and give 8 the adventures he deserved, in audio drama form, of course. Some of them are good, some of them are so-so, and some of them are downright creepy. But it's incredible acting, really well done sound effects, plus getting to know 8 has been really cool. Honestly, after all these audio dramas I've listened to, The 8th Doctor has become one of my favorite doctors.
This one is REALLY cool. It has that blend of Old-time fixed point disaster mixed in with a little swashbuckling adventure. It was actually the one that formally introduced me to Paul McGann's rendition of the 8th Doctor. It also introduced me to one of his first companions, Charlotte "Charley" Pollard. She was kind of like Rose Tyler in a way, only a Rose Tyler from 1930 with a lot of spunk and a lot of pluckiness. There was kind of a romance thing going on between 8 and Charley which I found rather cute (And before you ask, they are on my list of OTPs now), but with all things like companions, you know that they're not going to stay for very long. But of course I'm not going to spoil that for you.
There's also this one. It was creepy, but I absolutely LOVED it. I've read some books where in order for the main character to fix something, they have to travel to different periods in time in order to find the missing pieces or clues to the root of the issue. I'm going to try to sum it up in a way that's spoiler-free: so what happens is that through a long series of events (haven't exactly listened to the audio drama that's supposed to come before it, I've kinda been hopping around) the Doctor absorbs an anti-time virus, which gives him the personality of an old Gallifreyan nursery rhyme character called Zagreus. And it's up to Charley to stop Zagreus and save the Doctor. A whole lot of people from the classics show up, as well as Doctors 5, 6, and 7. Well, at least characters that Charley encounters that sound like them. But it's SO very good and I would totally recommend it for a listen.
This, though. Gave me the heebie jeebies something fierce. I saw this advertised on facebook cause I follow the official Doctor Who page, and I found it on Spotify, lo and behold. It was a good thing I listened to it during the day. It talks about the origin of the cybermen, who were once called Mondasian Cybermen. It was also the first one that I've listened to with the 5th Doctor, played by Peter Davison. It's quite creepy and it's quite good. This one definitely was one of those "tricky scenarios" that the Doctor happens to get caught in sometimes. Since Mondas was fated to become an all cyber race, he couldn't exactly do a lot, nor could he stop the inevitable from happening. The reason why I found it so creepy was cause from the first episode that introduced the cybermen which was in season 2 of the Doctor Who tv reboot, is because cybermen are basically humans that have everything human taken away from them in a very brutal process, until they're nothing more than emotionless metal shells.
This is of course the part where someone sensible says "You know the cybermen are fictional, right, Mariah?" to which my reply is that of course I know that they're fictional, but the fact that something so fictional can be so freaking creepy just gets to me. But anyway, there is just SO many more that I consider to be SO good, but I don't want to make this post too long. So consider this part 1 of a kind of series, I guess.
Thanks for reading, and happy wednesday!
