In memoriam 1/28/16

Yesterday we lost another great actor. Whovians know him as the War Doctor, from the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special The Day of The Doctor. Potterheads know him as Ollivander the wand maker (and I know that because an article I read about his passing.) Others know him as the Dragon from BBC's Merlin. For a man of the acting variety, he was very diverse when it came to acting roles, with a cinematic and tv career spanning about six decades. For an 18-year-old like me that's figuring out life in the future, it's pretty impressive for someone like him to have had as long an acting career as he had. I found him very convincing as the Hitler-like character of Chancellor Adam Sutler,  and very fierce as The Dragon in The BBC tv show Merlin, about the legendary wizard of Camelot.

But I know him better as the War Doctor, who made his sudden, (and slightly unannounced) appearance in The Day of The Doctor. His spin on the iconic character of the Doctor was a new one; one hardened by war, forgotten by (all but one) of the doctor's incarnations because of an unspeakable act he committed that led to the destruction of his home planet and the deaths of the time lords. His character was one that was more rough, a "self defined monster" if you will. His introduction to the show was definitely surprising one, the "anti hero" to the Doctor's general heroic one. He will be missed. His talent was a shinging light in the fandom world, loved by all, no doubt missed by many. I thought it fitting to put up the clip from the special that introduced him to the fandom in love with a time traveling time lord.

Thank you, John Hurt, for gifting the whovians with your talents. You will be missed.

Thanks for reading, and happy saturday!
